Best Bread for French Toast
So I’ve experimented with many different French Toast Recipes, and I’ve fine tuned it down to this. I love both Brioche French Toast and Challah French Toast. Both breads are very rich, as they are each made with eggs, which will take your french toast to a higher level as opposed to using a regular white bread.
I personally feel the texture of the Challah Bread makes the end result truly spectacular and incredibly delicious. If you prefer Brioche (or any other type of bread) by all means, go ahead and use it, the rest of this French Toast Recipe and steps will still be the same!
How to Make French Toast
- Begin by carefully slicing your loaf of Challah Bread into 1 ½ inch thick slices which should give you 6 slices from a regular 9 inch loaf.
- In a large bowl whisk together your eggs, cream, milk, sugar, cinnamon, salt, and vanilla extract.
- Pre-heat a skillet on medium-high heat, and add a chunk of butter to the skillet (about 1 tbsp). While the butter is melting, dip your bread slices into your mixture and let them fully saturate on each side.
- Once the butter has fully melted and begins bubbling, carefully lay your soaked bread slices into the hot skillet, 2 at a time. Cook on each side for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Repeat for the rest of the Challah Bread slices.
- Once the Challah French Toast is cooked, plate it and top with a soft smear of butter, powdered sugar, sliced strawberries, blueberries, maple syrup or any toppings you prefer!
The amount of time you allow the bread to soak in the mixture, will result in a different moisture content in the center of your French Toast. This comes down to preference. I personally love a heavy, dense slice of French Toast so I soak my slices until they are fully saturated. Others may like a lighter, fluffy French Toast, so in that case they may only want to coat each side of their bread slices in the mixture before cooking.
Common Questions About French Toast
Yes you can, however, you will need to add about 1 tbsp of corn starch to the French Toast mixture in place of the eggs. The corn starch will thicken the mixture and give the final product a similar texture and density as a classic French Toast that uses eggs.
Yes you can, but it will result in a more dense, eggy French Toast as opposed to the classic flavor and texture of a French Toast with both milk and eggs (we even add cream to our mixture).
To make French Toast Sticks, you would follow this same recipe, however, after cutting your loaf into slices, you would further cut your slices vertically into 4 “sticks” (or however many you prefer) and continue on with the recipe steps as normal.
Yes, French Toast holds up great in the freezer! After cooking your French Toast, allow it to fully cool, and wrap in plastic wrap or a freezer safe zip-top bag. Place it in the freezer for up to 2 months. To reheat, simply place the frozen French Toast in the toaster or oven at 375°F for about 10 minutes.
French Toast Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 Loaf challah bread
- 4 eggs
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ tsp salt
- 3 tbsp butter for cooking
Instructions
- Slice the challah bread loaf into 1 ½ inch thick slices. You should get about 6 slices at this thickness from a normal 9 inch loaf. You can also use a pre-sliced loaf.
- In a large bowl whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until the mixture is fully combined.
- Soak your Challah Bread slices in the mixture on each side until they are fully saturated. Pre-heat a skillet on medium-high heat, with 1 tbsp of butter in the skillet, while you are soaking your bread slices. Once the butter is fully melted and bubbling, lay your saturated bread slices into the skillet. Do not over crowd! I typically cook 2 slices at a time, for about 2-3 minutes on each side (or until the french toast has a nice golden brown color).
- Plate your French Toast and top with powdered sugar, sliced strawberries, blueberries, and maple syrup (or whichever toppings you prefer). Enjoy!
Made this french toast this morning and all I can say is WOW. Everyone loved it and the strawberries and blueberries were the perfect toppings!
This french toast recipe came out amazing and I definitely love using challah bread the best too! I dont really like strawberries or blueberries so I sliced up some banana, peanut butter and chocolate chips to top it and it was sooo good. You should try it!
